Staying on the left side of the road; a day on a scooter in Phuket

Like we’ve mentioned in our last post, we were meeting up with Micheal and Ilse to rent scooters and explore the Island of Phuket.

This great idea almost didn’t happen cause when we woke up in the morning around 08.30 there was so much rain falling from the sky that I wasn’t confident enough to drive a scooter in a country that I didn’t know and also had to focus on staying on the left side of the road. But after an hour the rain stopped and the sun came through. As if the weather gods knew we wanted to take a trip with the scooter.

So Sanne and I picked up Michael and Ilse and rented two scooters for only 250 baht per scooter for the whole day. After checking the scooters for damages and being demonstrated how the scooters worked, we set of to our first destination on Phuket. This was the big buddha on a very big hill. Getting there was tricky in the beginning for me because I’ve never ridden on the left side of the road before. So the first half hour I had to realy focus on staying on the “wrong” side of the road.  But Sanne told me afterwards that she wasn’t nervous or scared for her life one moment, so I did good my first time.

Heading up the hill to the big buddha was very cool thing to do and see. We drove over a road that had a lot of turns and was very steep at times. The view was a beautifull thing to see because you could see over the whole city of Phuket and the ocean next to the city. When we finally got to the top to see the big buddha, he apperently didn’t want to see us and decided to play hide & seek. What happened was that just when we got to the top the clouds were passing the mountain and the big buddha, so we were standing in the mist and we could only see the outlining of big buddha. That was a shame, but it was still cool to be up there.

After the big buddha we took a round trip over the island and tried to see as much as possible. At one point of this trip, an hour later, we were standing on a view point where we could see a very beautifull and green side of Phuket. And guess who was done playing hide & seek. Yes, u’ve guessed right, big buddha was there in the distant. Luckily my photocamera has an amazing zoom, so I still could take a picture of him. Its probably not his best side, but still i got him.

We drove some more, had lunch and after that we went back to our hostels and said our goodbyes. We had a good time with Michael and Ilse, they were fun people. And as soon as we entered our room in our hostel it started to rain again. As if the weather gods ….. well you know where i’m going with this sentence ;).

Sanne and I spend our late afternoon and the beginning of the evening looking on the internet where to go to after Phuket because the next day it was time to leave again. And we found a new destination. The beautifull island of Koh Samui is our next stop. But before we went to bed we met up one more time with Eden & Ruth, the twins we’ve also met during our Phuket stop. We had some food at a bar with alot of weird people. Too weird for us, so we moved to “our” local cocktailbar from the night before and had few drinks talked alot and about everything and after that we said our goodbyes. It was a shame to say goodbye cause we had alot of fun with the girls.

But the  good news is, next stop KOH SAMUIH PEOPLE!!

  1. Heel leuk geschreven, leest makkelijk weg. Ook de vorige verhalen. En het maakt niet uit of de verhalen in Engels of Nederlands zijn geschreven. Leuke en makkelijke schrijfstijl.
